OUR STORY

We have often joked about becoming farmers as we love the outdoors and desired to grow and eat our own food. During COVID we thought we would put the jokes aside and actually embark on our first faming venture - raising chickens. We started with four baby Issa Brown chickens. After nursing the baby chicks under a heat lamp for weeks to a good healthy size we lost all but one of them to the local fox. We learned our lesson quickly that 24/7 "free range" chickens was not going to be a reality in Potomac. We added a new set of chickens to the flock and after several months finally enjoyed the fruits of our labor with fresh eggs. The eggs are hand picked daily by our farm hands (Kai, Caleb and Connor). We love that this teaches them early lessons about caring about the importance of caring for beings other than themselves! During the summer of 2020 the boys and their father also built the chicken coop from scratch.  Kai and Caleb measured out lumber, sawed and drilled and painted until the coop was finalized. They also incorporated an herb garden into the front of the coop. This allows us to have fresh rosemary, thyme, parsley and oregano. The next addition to our family farm will be an apple tree and a blueberry bush. We look forward to sharing more about our journey with you via this site. ~ The Washingtons
